In book ten of the Republic, Socrates declares that poets must be kept out of the ideal society because poetry can lead us away from the truth. Rather than agreeing or disagreeing with what me might recognize as censorship, let’s rather consider what relationship poetry, or art, has to the truth, however we define it. In other words, is art by necessity in opposition to the truth because art seems to be entirely subjective? Or does art actually speak to universal ideas and themes that everyone can relate to? Or is it somewhere in between?
