Response Three: Franklin – American Dream and the Self-Made Man

Explain how Franklin presents his life story, in Parts One and Two of his Autobiography, as
a validation of and support for  a new economic system, namely
capitalism (i.e. free trade, entrepreneurship, individualism, and class
mobility, etc.). What new values, beliefs, and practices does Franklin
particularly celebrate in his Autobiography? How
does he equate these new economic facets of modern life to the
Enlightenment-era culture that begins to emerge throughout the 18th
century? How and why do you think his life story helped to create both
the ideal of the American Dream and the figure of the self-made man?
